Welcome to the largest beach town in Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province, Tamarindo
Capitan Suizo is a beginner-level break at the top end of Playa Langosta. Perfect for lessons. Waves aren’t powerful and offer nice flat surfaces to glide onto after a slow take-off. All very fun. All very easy. Have fun!
Strictly high-tide spot with waves that form off the rocks that go under when the water comes deeper into Tamarindo bay, Pico Pequeno is a fine intermediate option. It can hold really well and loves a strong westerly swell, which it refracts off the stones underfoot to offer neat wedges with predominantly left shoulders. It can get rippable but is usually powerful because it’s a head-on break that sucks on the groundswells. Pico Grande: big and beauty, Barrels and Rocks
The River Mouth is the advanced break in Tamarindo. Walk all the way up to the river and head out at the mouth for some power and fun waves. Mostly rights, but there can be fun lefts into Casitas as well. Barrels can form at low tide with off shore winds. Almost any tide is decent for this area, but mid/high tide is best.
To get to this spot, you need to cross the Tamarindo River. Just take a short ride with one of the taxi boats that are always there for 1000 Colones (unless you want to take your chances with the crocks). Then, walk for about 5 more minutes, and you are there. Wonderful frame peak with a few people to share the waves
Playa Grande is a great surfing destination. This long stretch beach has different areas for different level surfers. Surfers with more experience can catch consistent beach breaks, while beginners can sharpen their skills in the whitewater closer to shore. We can find the most power and best shape in the area, which makes it the main focus for many of the region’s surfers
Located 1 km South from Playa Tamarindo, you’ll find a smaller beach that doesn’t see as many crowds. Making it a more quiet, peaceful spot than the city’s main beach. At this stretch of beach, you will experience big waves that offer both left- and right-hand breaks. The river mouth of Rio San Francisco offers some radical waves for experienced surfers. Fantastically powerful surf breaks that are a challenge even to veterans, but a fun and exhilarating one at that.
Is definitely one of the best surf spots in the area. A surfers’ beach by excellence, perfect throughout the year. Playa Avellanas is one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches in tune and harmony with the beautiful natural surrounding. The beach offering great surf with incredible flora and fauna. Close to Tamarindo, it still takes about 20-30 minutes to get there
Surf Spots > La Parruja, Lola's, Palo Seco, The river mouth, Little Hawai
WILD Really WIld! Playa Naranjo is a part of Santa Rosa National Park also known as Roca Bruja or Witches Rock. The beach is known for the name of a the rock right in front of the beach. The destination is a superb surf spot and a haven for the dedicated and experienced surfer.
It boasts one of the biggest beach breaks (after Dominical) on the country's Pacific coast surf. Playa Hermosa, official World Surfing Reserve, is ranked among some of the best places on the globe. It’s a place of sheer quality, barrels, beach peaks glore. One of the finest beach for surfing in Central America. A vibrant surf culture & World-class waves
Cabo Matapalo or just Matapalo is a small, laid-back beach village located at the tip of the Osa Peninsula. One of the most private beaches in Costa Rica, has immense waves only for experienced surfers. Skilled surfers will find plenty of challenge, a powerful and rocky right break that offers a very fast ride. One of the best-preserved regions in Costa Rica, Matapalo due to its unique position facing the ocean, the beach tends to attract western and southwestern swells, which makes for strong waves and excellent rides. Remote beaches, bumpy roads, and thick jungle that connects to the famous Corcovado National Park.
Pavones the "world's second longest wave" in terms of length, height, speed and swell. Arriving at your destination might entail an adventurous journey. Yet, the spot promises a reward beyond comparison—riding one of the world's most exhilarating and prolonged left-hand waves. Pavones truly encapsulates the Pura Vida experience, offering an invaluable addition to your surfing repertoire.
